I've replayed very few games and most are getting very damn old but I've mostly not been disappointed... And they're the ones that did not get remasters too sadly. Deus Ex I'm looking at you. But yeah there might be occasions where reality and experience beat the crap out of nostalgia. It's not life ending and doesn't diminish the part of me that once used to love that game/movie/... Then again I've always been very critical in the first place. Very few games I truly enjoy, love or even complete !

A rather unique, opposite approach is taken in Celeste: instead of "should it be one playthrough or more?", it offers you several voluntary cop-out endings that count. The game is, after all, about choosing to continue the journey, and not about having to.

I just wanted to pop in to say that this is honestly one of the best RUclips videos I've seen, not just on the subject of gaming, but in general. I saw it when it first came out, but I still come back to it, again and again, years later. I recommend it to friends. I recommend it in the comment sections of other videos, (most recently, when someone was claiming that video games are a more accessible version of story-based-media than reading, because of the level of required functional literacy. I used this video of a reference to how video games actually require more than one type of functional literacy, both in whatever language you speak, but in the language of games themselves.) Hell, I've even used it as a resource on a large project back in University. It's informative, entertaining, cohesive, and well explained.

For me the character creator was scary even though I game because I do not play dnd, so I had no idea about any of the classes. Went with bard for my first character which also kinda set my background. ...Then I got to the spells and was like I have no idea what I am doing to picked the ones that seemed like they would insult everyone or were crowd control because that is the type of character I like to play in other games. Ended up playing a lot with vicious mockery because I loved listening to the insults. Also died...a lot.

I have actually approached an open-world game that way - I didn't understand the idea, nor did I notice much to explore (having trouble with spatial orientation in 3d space). It was Fallout 3, and anyone who played it can imagine how miserable is the experience of going with the main quest there.

I love to explore open worlds, and some days more than following main quest. however, some maps are overflowing with same boring stuff like Horizon , and most annoying is you can not fast travel from anywhere. or you cant access your strorage from every checkpoint , you need to go to some point first. I like combination , some day I want to focus on long chain main quest, other day like to discover new area and do easy short side quest. forcing me to go linear or travel only from travel point is taking the fun out for me

Personally I don't take achievements into considerstion, they are meaningless, often require you to do obscure, tedious and pointless things. What counts as completionism to me is simply finishing all the content, as in the quests, minigames, extra game modes and whatever. And of course, I only do that with games that I really like and don't find tedious.

Hollow Knight having no difficulty options made me stop trying. The second boss, Hornet, requires you to perform a series of actions in order to not get hit and land a hit. I figured out WHAT it wants me to do. However, I am unable to perform it as many times in a row as the game wants me to (and I can't even see how many that is, or how far I progressed in that fight - there are no health bars). In comparison, Celeste offers a modifiable assist mode. This approach lets you get the feel of what exactly is too hard, before going in and modifying the difficulty. By default, Celeste is too fast for me. Even at 50% speed, it only approaches "normal" - and feels faster than many games I played. Dash assist allows me to actually engage with dash mechanic, instead of frantically mashing unknown buttons and hoping for the best - by default, I can't even tell which direction it will go, let alone doing it at a very precise moment of falling onto spikes of instant death. Hades approaches difficulty in a very inconvenient way: it has a damage reduction option, but nothing to reduce game speed - and the game is so fast, that most of the time it's impossible to tell what's going on with all the explosions and movement. Which makes it "easier" to proceed, but in no way satisfying. Extreme speed of the game does not allow players like me to even begin figuring out how to approach it - I know what things are possible in a given scenario, but not which of them is currently taking place.

Or difficulty names can be misleading too, A moment with difficulty in a game that enraged me was Black Ops 3 “realistic” which was the most bs difficulty I have ever seen, and most definitely was not realistic. You die in two shots, realistic enough, but enemies take full clips and live

28:00 this actually the reason why giving missle tanks in secret spots works in Metroid games. If you aren't familiar with this series, missles are a weapon stronger than your main one but with a limited ammo. Game frequently gives you ammo capacity as a reward. The thing is that at some point you have so many missles that you don't care about getting another five. So missle tank basically means "Congrats! You found a secret! No real reward is here". It is kinda frustrating but it allows you to explore for the sake of exploring.

Adaptive-selective difficulty. The ability to choose how much the game will adjust to your performance where "Normal" allows for minor adjustments, but tries to keep to the feel of the game, "fixed" locks the game to a line, and "variable" can make the game way harder or easier based on player skill.

I've been catching up on your videos and it’s fascinating to see how your wife's gaming journey reflects the broader theme of how our personalities shape our approach to life. It reminds me of my own start in gaming, which was influenced by my then-partner who was a gamer. Interestingly, I’m quite different from your wife in my gaming style. It seems like gamers could be viewed on a spectrum-from what I'd call an "accountant" style (preferring clear directions and disliking ambiguity) to a "researcher" style (thriving on exploration and disliking constraints). For example, I’ve heard from coworkers how open-world games feel overwhelming to them, whereas anything less than that feels claustrophobic to me. My first game was an open-world adventure, and I never found myself asking, “where do I have to go?” This just goes to show how much personality and our comfort with uncertainty play into how new players experience gaming. Thanks for sharing these videos!
